Baby Chicks and Setting Up Our Brooders
Since our first set of chickens we have done quite a lot of “learning”. Chickens are often thought of as “dumb” animals. However getting the experience to work closely with our girls shows how truly unique poultry can be. Our current brooding setups consist of livestock tanks and larger capacity waterers & feeders. This allows us a simple yet effective way to maintain a clean and healthy environment as new arrivals grow big enough to make their way out to the outdoor chicken coop.
Building a Predator Proof Chicken Coop
Chicken coops come in all shapes and sizes. Some raise as a food source while others keep the chickens as pets. How we all raise our flocks is ultimately up to us as responsible poultry owners .In our case we wanted to enclose our chickens (not free-ranging, yet) in a way that not only kept the flock safe from outside predators but also was easy to clean & maintain. The structure measures 8′ x 24′ with an 8’x 8′ elevated coop with food & water accessible from the exterior as well as a 4-bay roll-away nest box for our girls.
